Acid-base status of adults with sickle-cell anaemia.

Determinations of the acid-base status of 10 adult Jamaican patients with sickle-cell anaemia during "painful crisis" and after recovery showed no evidence of metabolic acidosis in the former, in contrast to reports from elsewhere. These results could explain the failure of alkalis to abort or alter the acute painful episodes of most patients with sickle-cell anaemia.

Absorption Spectra of Normal Adults and Patients with Sickle Cell Anaemia Haemoglobins Treated with Hydrogen Peroxide at Two pH Values

Background: The aim of the present study was application of haemoglobin absorption spectroscopy as a distinguishing tool for identification of two haemoglobin types-HbA and HbS. Material and Methods: Millimolar absorptivities of normal adult haemoglobin (HbA) and sickle cell haemoglobin (HbS) were monitored at pH values of 7.2 and 5.0, within the ultra violet and visible spectral range (250-...

Gastric acid secretion in sickle-cell anaemia.

The gastric acid response to the augmented histamine test was measured in 115 Ghanaian patients, including 45 cases of sickle-cell anaemia. Normal gastric acid responses were found in the patients with sickle-cell anaemia, suggesting that the frequent occurrence of indigestion in patients with this disorder is unlikely to be related to abnormal gastric acid secretion.

Cardiovascular features in adolescents and adults with sickle cell anaemia.

Fifty five sickle cell anaemia (SCA) patients at the Kenyatta National Hospital were studied with a view to elucidating their cardiovascular status. Their age range was 13 to 27 years (median 18.9 years). They comprised 27 males and 28 females and their mean haemoglobin concentration was 8.5 +/- 1.4 g/dl. Haemoglobin level of 8.0-9.9 g/dl seen in 30 patients was noted to confer the lowest incid...
